It’s not every day a customer lands a 17kg kingfish from the rocks, and this week we had the pleasure of weighing one instore. Anthony Amos headed off to his local spot for a bit of live baiting and spinning. Using a heavy threadline outfit Anthony put a live squid out under a float then sat back and waited, it wasn’t too long before the outfit was screaming and a torrid battle ensued. Landing a fish this size is a particularly huge task as plenty of decent fish are lost to the rocks during the fight, great effort mate, with this king well over a metre it certainly is a good time to be out there getting into them.

The harbour is a little murky after the rains this week but wont take long to clear, plenty of bait is available at local live bait collection spots like Balmoral, The Spit and Fairlight. If it’s the big kings you want be sure to have reliable heavy kit as it will be put to the test on this size of fish.

If it’s a little less strenuous type of fishing you prefer head down to Clontarf Beach and takes some soft plastics and blades with you as the flathead are on the chew, cast out past the drop off and work your lures slowly. Some good captures of whiting are also coming from our sand flats. These fellas love the king beachworms whether they’re frozen or fresh, and whiting are one of the best eating fish you can throw in the pan.
