Report 3/12/15

Unusual captures are fairly common this time of year often whilst chasing other species, Matthew Young found this out recently when he hooked a small mako shark fishing with Oceanhunter Sportsfishing during a kingfish session. The guys headed out to Long Reef with a tank full of live bait when Mat dropped one over the side and his reel started screaming, the mako attacked the bait managing to dislodge the hook only for it to become foul hooked in its tail, a quick couple of photos and this shark was released.

More successful reports this week have come from Little Manly Point, The Spit and Balmoral. All three venues have had salmon and tailor schools visit turning general fisher people into frenzied anglers, one customer reported the surface action was crazy with fish everywhere you looked small baitfish were getting chased down.

North Harbour has had some good fishing this week, Tim Layton fished the drop off near the marina at low tide landing three flathead to 52cm on soft plastics and 4 bream on king worms during a run up tide session. Blue swimmer crabs are now on the move in our estuaries and it’s a great time to put the witches’ hat traps out to catch a Christmas feed.
