Report 29/1/16

We’re smack in the middle of a cracker offshore fishing season at the moment and some awesome reports are coming in from big and small boats alike, Marlin and Mahi Mahi are the two most targeted species at this time of year with plenty of anglers hooking up.

The guys over at Oceanhunter Sportsfishing have landed four marlin from as many trips this week and plenty of the mahi as well. Andy young ventured out in his 5mtr inflatable to a local FAD and started casting surface lures around on his 15kg outfit and it didn’t take long before he hooked a ripper Mahi that once boated measured in at 1.37mtrs, these fish are the fastest growing in the ocean and can go aerial during the fight.

Surface schools are feeding aggressively in the harbour with kings and salmon taking poppers and soft plastics, there was plenty of action at The Spit during the week when a school of fish trapped a baitball at Clontarf up against the drop off, anglers were coming from everywhere to hook up and it was a great sight to watch, landbased anglers, kayakers and small boaters all got amongst them with plenty of fish to 75cms being caught on just about every lure thrown at them.
