Report 14/7/16

It’s all about the tuna offshore this week with some terrific catches and reports coming in from out wide. Bluefin up to 130kg have been landed this week with plenty of yellowfin in the 35 to 65kg range being boated, trolled skirted lures have been working well on the big barrels as to has cubing up a berley trail. Fish have been landed from Long Reef wide to the back end of the southern canyons, finding the fish means working the temperature breaks so be prepared to cover some ground. Black Pete Marine’s James Thackeray was successful in landing a 90kg Bluefin this week. Thackeray mentioned to pay attention to the top 200 metres of your sounder and when you find the fish work that area. Schools of albacore tuna are working in the same areas so a tuna grand slam is always a possibility.

Closer to shore the harbour has come alive with reports doubling from last week, more trevally, flathead and bream are being caught from Balmoral to the heads. Techniques from working vibes and plastics on the bottom to slow drifting lightly unweighted baits have been a recipe for success for small boat anglers this week.
