Report 15/5/18

Post by Nicole Penfold » Thu May 17, 2018 3:53 pm

A lot has been happening at Corner Inlet but the biggest news was the big run of snapper we had a couple of weeks ago until last week. There were stacks of big fish caught with some exceeding 8kg and lots around 3-6kg and some pinkies as well. The Franklin channel was the main spot to hit and was consistently producing good numbers of reds, they may still be there now, but no one has been out due to weather for a few days so if you head out, it would be worth heading up the Franklin and seeing if there's any more snapper still around.

The whiting fishing has been good finally, with Port Albert giving most anglers a dozen or so good fish to 40cm and a few undersized ones as well. Welshpool in the Lewis channel has been good as well and there's been some excellent catches there.

Offshore, the gummy shark fishing has been the best all year, with areas east of the islands producing the most fish anywhere from in close in 12m to out wide in 26m of water. There's still kingies around as well, but the water temp is dropping so i reckon we have another 2 months tops of kingy fishing or at least until the water temp drops below 14 degrees. The offshore Flathead fishing has been outstanding as usual with most anglers are bagging out on the drift in 22m to 35m of water.

Back inside, the garfish are going good with plenty up over 35cm and the calamari fishing has been exceptional as well both at welsh pool and Port Albert and off the jetties too with Yamashita 3.5" jigs doing all the damage.

On the 90 mile, the salmon have been thick and you can walk and spin with 40g metal slugs and catch as many as you want. Awesome fishing there. And at night, there's stacks of elephant fish and still a few gummies as well. The gippy lakes rivers are chockers of dusky flathead so take plenty of soft plastics and vibes and you will have a ball. Anyway check out some of the pics below.

Wayne Redpath from Wilsons Promontory Fishing Charters and Guiding Services got onto a late season run of snapper in the Franklin Channel last week. He landed some big fish over the 7kg mark.

Another great couple of catches from the past 2 weeks from Wilsons Promontory Fishing Charters with a few bags of snapper, pinkies and gummies up to 4kg. Top fishing. Wayne said the water temp seems to dropping fast so get in quick before the snapper are off the chew.

Shane, Andrew and myself went offshore to chase some late season kingfish. We only managed 2 keepers and 1 undersized. All fish were caught on knife jigs. The pinkies went fairly well at the end of the day but the wind got too strong to keep going so we had to leave early. Good feed in the end though.

The Port Albert Pier has been producing plenty of Calamari on Yamashita squid jigs, this one in the gold color. They aren't huge but enough for a good feed or some fresh whiting bait.

Harmonie Smith with yet another cracking big gummy caught out the front of Port Albert entrance. An absolute pearler, well done!

Liam Jobson and Matt Quinn caught this cracking feed out front of Port Albert.

Ian Chammings caught these beautiful garfish inside Port Albert. Well done mate, a great feed there.

Kev Buhagier and Rod Gillham caught a dozen cracking whiting to 40cm in the Port Albert channel using pippis and suid during the run in tide. The BKK circle hook doing the job nicely here.

Mick Gned has been smashing th dusky flathead up the rivers in the gippy lakes over the past week. This one took a hurricane Sting 37 vibe.

Not only has Mick been slaying the flathead but hes been getting some good bream as bi-catch all on the vibes.

Dylan Shaw with an absolute horse of a tailor caught whilst chasing Bream. Thats unreal mate. Caught on a Bent Minnow.

Andrew Wright and Shane Wedrowicz have been catching a stack of salmon off the surf lagtely. The salmon afre thick with bait everywhere and tonnes of birds diving and a fish a cast. Doesn't get any better than that. All caught on metal slugs ranging from 30, 40 and 50g with blue, silver and pearl white all working the best. EjTodd Ignition metals, Sea Rock Slugs, Gillies Baitfish and Laser Lures all worked a treat.

A nice 90cm gummy shark from Golden Beach from 2 weeks ago caught on a piece of bonito fillet.

A big elephant fish we caught at the Honeysuckles. Theres stacks of these around now, we have been catching 3 or 4 per session. Caught on a piece of squid.

Dave Wilkenson had a cracking session off the surf a few weeks ago at Golden Beach landing nealy a dozen tailor and a gummy shark and some other bits and pieces.

Paul Landmeter from Brave Rods lanbded this cracking 48cm Brown Trout at Blue rock last week whilst trolling a tassie devil lure.

Frazier Ryan with a nice Bass caught on fly in rainbow creek. it took a olive wooly bugger.
