Hello again guys..... The big news over the past 2 weeks was the water temp rise and the snapper bite. Firstly we had the water bump up to 18 degrees a week and a half ago which got the snapper biting big time and more recently (Tuesday just gone, straight after that 37 degree day we had) we had a whopping 19.2 degrees on the sounder in around 10 meters of water, but the average temp was around 18.4. so definitely a major water temp rise recently which has bought the season into full swing. Firstly snapper! 20 pounder have been caught, heaps of 70cm to 85cm fish as well and all varying in weight from 5kg to 7.5. In fact the average size of fish seems to be up this year with stacks of snapper coming close to 80cm,. Prime locations were Franklin channel especially up top and down to boat city and halfway shoal. The entrance around Singapore deep has fished best over the past few days and it seem the fish have come down back down towards the entrance as we have seen more fish in the entrance area and all the way out to buoy 2. The toora has been pretty good as well but is producing more pinkies and whiting and some good gummies than other spots. The gummies are everywhere but they are still not huge and most are around 85cm to 1 meter, the only big gummies Ive seen have been offshore or in whale bay area. The whiting have been amazing and they are all big this year with 35cm being a small one and 38cm the average and heaps at around 40 to 42cm. The Lewis channel has been as good a place as any to fish for whiting, just move around a bit until you find them. Target 4 meters of water to start with and work your way from there casting around until you get one. Pippies and squid are fine. Back to the snapper, prime baits have been squid strips or squid heads, especially for the larger fish, in saying that, this week...most of the snapper have been caught on pilchards, so take both. Ive heard of way more snapper caught on a running sinker snelled rig but the paternoster has produced a couple of good fish but more of those school sized snapper of around 2 to 4kg. Some good days weather is on the be ready!
Its all happening down here and a good place to go when the weather isn't perfect and there's usually somewhere fish able at Port Albert. The whiting have been the main target and anglers are bagging out easily on both tides. Pippis and squid being the prime baits. The snapper have moved in and are in the snake channel and are being caught close to the tide changes. There plenty of pinkies inside now and they are ranging from undersized to 40cm and are being caught by whiting anglers in the shallow areas in Port Albert, midge and old port channels. Plenty of flatties around as well, get over there!!
