Report 23/10/15

Corio Bay
With calm conditions Sunday morning Kim Gorell and Pete Beard decided to head out from St Helens. Drifting soft plastics over the channel edges Pete’s rod nearly fell over board when a snapper of 5.5kg jumped on the other end. After a short battle Pete boated the snapper that was in excellent condition. Also fishing Corio Bay on Sunday was Tackleworld Geelong staff member Adam Van der Lught and Paul Mayer casting soft plastics over the spoil grounds the guys boated an impressive bag of larger model flathead. Wanting to mix things up the guys then set their sights on bream inside Grammar School lagoon, where once again casting lightly weighted soft plastics the pair took bream to 38cm.

Clifton Springs
Clifton Springs was the chosen location for the majority of snapper anglers last week and with good reason too. Joe Novella ventured out to the Turn off Clifton Springs were with some persistence he boated a 7.2kg snapper. Over at the Quarries Saturday morning Ben Mclean was out at first light in search of snapper. Baiting up with pilchard Ben took a snapper of 4.5 kg just after sun up. On the way home Ben drifted over the shallow grass beds where he achieved a nice bag of squid using Gan Craft squid jigs that will keep him in supply of bait for the next week.

Queenscliff
Over at Queenscliff squid are still present in great numbers. The grass beds to the left of the Harbour has seen plentiful numbers of squid holding over the thick weed beds with anglers boating squid to 2.5kg on the last of the incoming tide. The Queenscliff Bight was another squid production location.

Barwon Estuary
The Barwon Estuary is still holding Silver Trevally as Digby Ford found out when he put in a few hours last week, Digby also landed a Taylor of 36cm. The entrance of the river at run in tide produced fantastic sized King George Whiting to 45cm. Although the whiting are of a great size anglers have only achieved bags of around 5 to 6 fish.

Ocean Grove
Offshore from Ocean Grove Barwon Heads large Southern Bluefin Tuna to 120kg were taken by keen anglers willing to cover large distances of water. As has been the case for most of the tuna season large skirted lures worked the best.

Hopkins River
Last Week Tackleworld Geelong staff member Chris Pitman took a run down to the Hopkins River were casting lures Chris's encountered bream and estuary perch to 35cm. Most effective lure on the estuary perch was a Daiwa double clutch in 60mm.

Barwon River
On the freshwater scene Buckley falls down to Queenspark found redfin willing to take both soft plastics and lures. Most redfin have been averaging 800 grams and are holding in tightly packed schools allowing anglers to bag numbers of fish.

St Augustines
ST Augustines in Waurn Ponds has Rainbow trout left over from the recent school holiday stocking program. These trout responded well to small hardbody lures and pink powerbait.

Bullen Merri
Bullen Merri continued to see anglers bank Chinook Salmon to 2kg fishing baits from the lake margins. Anglers just need to keep an eye on the level of Blue Green algae, as with the warmer weather the algae tends to bloom.

Lake Wendouree
Up at Ballarat Lake Wendouree gave up Brown Trout to 2kg for those fishing mudeye suspended under a float from the lake edges. Lures did account for a few trout but mudeye were the standout tactic.

Next Week
Next week those looking for a snapper fix should once again set their sights on Clifton Springs. Otherwise Queenscliff is well worth a look with monster squid still latching on to any jig that crosses there path. Freshwater anglers will find Bullen Merri holding Chinook Salmon on bait either from the boat or the bank.
