Report 20/11/15

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Nov 20, 2015 9:43 am

Not everyone is focused on snapper at present. Mark Sesar and Adrian Cole ventured out from St Leonards the Monday before last and after making a few attempts the guys settled on fishing the area surrounding the White Lady. Adding a little to berley to the water it wasn’t long before the whiting started coming aboard. By the end of a frantic session between them, 33 whiting were boated with a good dozen measuring in at 38cm. The pair noted that once the sun went down the whiting dispersed.

Queenscliff
With windy conditions last week anglers focused on more secluded areas. The Queenscliff Boat Harbour once again held great numbers of Silver Trevally to 40cm for anglers casting soft plastics in the main cut and around the moored boats. Some of the best results achieved by anglers came from those fishing at night, with trevally holding in and around lights that attract schools of bait. From all reports the large squid are still on offer for those prepared to fish the deeper sections out from Queenscliff Bight, here in the fast water larger jigs will work the best. Schools of Australian Salmon have from time to time been spotted feeding on the surface and are more than willing to devour a white ocky skirted lure trolled on the outside of the commotion.

Clifton Springs
Once again Clifton Springs provided snapper anglers with a much need fix. Andrew Pettit was fishing alongside his father James last Sunday morning just out from the Quarries. Using freshsilver whiting they had just collected for bait Andrews offering was quickly picked up by asnapper of over 4kg that in 5 meters of water took some keen angling to boat.

Werribee
Heading further up the bay Dylan Curran was hoping for a snapper or two out from Werribee. Not having much luck on recent trips Dylan was quite keen to finally put a snapper in the boat. As it turned out Dylan’s persistence was not in vain with a snapper of 93cm and 8.2kg a personal best being boated. Soft plastic anglers working the reef structures around Werribee also took snapper to 4kg at first and last light although you do have to pick through the numerous small pinkies to find some quality.

Surf Coast
Down the surf coast Brain Long and John Mole last Wednesday encountered some exceptional Salmon fishing spinning from the rock platforms surrounding Lorne. The guys banked Salmon to just over 2kg in wet conditions.

Out of Town
Out of town Tackleworld Geelong staff member Adam Van Der Lugt has spent the last week fishing estuary systems between Mallacoota and Tathra where he has had no trouble in taking a wide variety of species such as bream, flathead, salmon and tailor all on soft plastics and hard body lures. Some of Adam’s standout captures have included bream over 40cm and flathead over 70cm.

Lake Eildon
On the freshwater side of things Lake Eildon is the place to be. Justin Burns spent a day casting lures at the lake edges where he boated a yellow belly of over 50cm. Andrew Richmond was also at Lake Eildon fishing with his daughter where they caught and released numerous cod to just over 60cm plus witnessed a few follows from some much larger models.

Barwon River
Locally the Barwon River is providing those putting in the time with redfin averaging 800gramsor so. Best locations include Break Water and further up to Queenspark. Lures worked in tight around the undercut banks and structure is key to banking numbers of fish.

Next Week
Next week those looking to get out on the water should find Queenscliff holding a few large squid and schools of Australian Salmon popping up on the surface. Wilson Spit area is the most likely place to start your search for a snapper or two. Freshwater anglers if able should make to drive to Lake Eildon to experience some of the fantastic fishing on offer.
