Report 26/11/15

Barwon Estuary
With Mulloway on his mind Daniel Baden ventured up the Barwon Estuary last Wednesday evening. After carefully selecting the section of river to fish he baited up and sat back in anticipation. Just after the tide change Daniels rod sprang to life and after a brief fight he boated a Mulloway of 75cm. Continuing on Daniel was about to call it a day when his rod once again took off this time the culprit was a mulloway of 67cm. Other anglers fishing the Barwon Estuary have noted excellent numbers of silver trevally to 45cm that have been devouring both bait and lure.

St Leonards
Over at St Leonards whiting and squid continue to dominate reports with the odd snapper being taken as well. Squid have been located over the grass beds just out from the mark known as the red bluff to the south of the boat ramp. The whiting were once again holding straight out from the ramp in 5 to 6 meters of water with the run out tide giving up most fish. Snapper anglers fishing St Leonards found early morning trips essential last week as the fish became shut down once first light arrived.

Werribee
Fishing out of Werribee last Sunday Cesare Abbate from Tackleworld Laverton was on the hunt for snapper. Fishing in excellent conditions Cesare was able to boat a chucky snapper of 7.45kg that engulfed his bait.

Clifton Springs
Closer to home Clifton Springs was still the standout location for snapper. Although this week anglers had to contend with more trying conditions those who put in the effort took snapper to 6kg. Anglers putting in the time to catch a squid or silver whiting before targeting snapper found the going easier with larger snapper more willing to take fresh bait.

Surf Coast
At it again Brian Long and John Mole were fishing Cinema Point last Wednesday casting metal lures at Australian Salmon. The pair had no trouble in banking salmon averaging 1kg with a few larger models of 2kg thrown into the mix.

Barwon River
Freshwater anglers fared well this week with the Barwon River giving up great numbers of redfin. Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt tried a different approach when fishing the Barwon for redfin. Casting small Bassman spinner baits Adam attracted and caught larger redfin to 40cm in amongst heavy snags. Adams chosen location was upstream from Queenspark.

Lake Bullen Merri
Down the Western District and from all report Lake Bullen Merri has a growing level of blue green algae which appears around the warmer months each year. There is still fish to be caught but the going has been tough with only a few smaller model Chinook salmon being banked.

Lake Purrumbete
However next door at Lake Purrumbete the water conditions are excellent and anglers making an early start and slowly trolling hardbody lures took trout and Chinook salmon to 1.5kg working the weed lined edges.

Lake Elingamite
Those with small water craft such as punts or kayaks have been able to make their way onto lake Elingamite and casting or trolling hard body lures such as Daiwa double clutches they took both Rainbow and Brown trout to 2kg with the odd large redfin making an appearance too.

Lake Eildon
Heading north Lake Eildon fished well for natives this past week. Trever Holmes from Victorian Inland Charters and his clients encountered Yellow Belly casting lures around steep inclines on the lake margins. Trolling lures along the main rock wall Trev also boated a small cod in great condition.

Next Week
Next week anglers should continue to focus on snapper with St Leonards worth a try. There has been rumours of a few Kingfish starting to appear off Barwon Heads / Ocean Grove which could be worth look. For the freshwater anglers try the Barwon River around Queenspark as the redfin are sure to be on the chew.
