Report 20/5/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri May 20, 2016 3:51 pm

Fishing has been very difficult this week with the weather smashing us again. There have been some good fish caught in close down South Port Phillip such as Whiting and Squid and for the keen land based angler Snapper have been good and also Gummies around Westernport bay.

Tuna have been abundant but hard to reach on the coast again with some ridiculous winds. Although, it turns out when the weather is bad on the West, the East seems to look good! Broad bill fishing has taken on a new level and is making massive improvements fast with some good fish coming in again in Lakes Entrance! Hopefully this week brings some good weather and we can get back out and crack some big fish!

It has been difficult for everyone this past week again with the weather hammering us. For those who are keen there have been some good reports of Salmon around Mornington area being taken on small metal lures and Pilchard baits. Land based fishos in particular have been doing the best with the conditions!

Squid have been in excellent numbers again around Mount Martha and the Western side of the bay in close. Although the water has been very dirty customers have been finding that orange and bright jigs have been the key.

Whiting are still firing around the Southern end of the bay with good numbers been taken on both fresh Squid and Mussle baits. Customers have been finding that depths of 2-4m have been key on broken ground.
Gawaine Blake and a few mates went out fishing around Mount Martha area the other day in some atrocious condition. They said the water was very dirty and bright orange jigs did the best to get their bag of squid. They had no trouble making their bag of 120 whiting between 6 people too! Best bait was fresh Cuttle fish strips!

Steve Taylor and his 6 year old daughter hit Mornington pier for a fish the other day. Steve was about to call it when his daughter said to stay, not five minutes later they landed this monster 6kg fish!
Western Port has been a bit tough with this weather this week so fishing has been scarce. The people who have managed to get out this week have done quite well on gummy sharks. They have been fishing very well through the upper reaches of the Port in Tooradin channels and the Bouchier channel. For those land based, fishing Stockyard Point and Lang Lang has been hard with lots of weed but rewarding on the Gummy Shark front.

Matt Saphire and Ben Symons hit Westernport recently for a shot at some Jewies. Unfortunately they were unable to tempt one but got a nice feed of Squid and Snapper!
Some great Squid have been getting caught up near Quail Bank on bright jigs. In particular bright Green has been doing well!
THIS SATURDAY AT 6AM ON CHANNEL 10- On Season 3 Episode 5
Lee catches up with his long time mate Stewart Hindson at the huge estuary known as Mallacoota Inlet. Here the boys fish with a range of lures and give plenty of tips on catching bream on lures.
