Report 26/5/16

With his sights set on whiting Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore set off from Queenscliff just after sunset. Arriving on the grass beds just left of the harbour Michael dropped anchor, after a few tentative bites and the odd whiting Michael decided it was time for a move. Shifting only a 100 metres or so away made all the difference with Michael boating numerous double headers of King George Whiting averaging 40cm which saw him reach a bag limit capture in no time. Michael made note the tenderized cuttlefish was the most successful bait.

Swan Bay
Just around the corner at Swan Bay anglers have had no trouble in boating a bag of squid, even in trying weather conditions. Peri and Michael Stavropoulos were at it once again this time fishing inside the Swan Bay channel last Friday night. Although the gummy sharks didn’t play the game the guys caught a rather unusual capture with an octopus of 7.5kg taking there bait intended for a gummy shark.

Corio Bay
Corio Bay continues to entertain anglers with pinkie snapper and salmon for those casting soft plastics around structure. There has been reports from anglers marking solid snapper on their sounder underneath the schools of Salmon around the grain pier. With the cold winter nights almost here it’s worth putting in a few hours trying to tempt one our trophy winter snapper.

Surf Coast
Offshore from Breamlea Saturday morning Chole Hedditch was fishing alongside her farther Riki in 20 metres of water. Chloe’s rod buckled over when her fresh squid as bait was devoured by a gummy shark that gave an excellent account for itself on 7kg tackle. Moving out to 26 meters of water and drifting with fresh squid as bait did the trick again with a snapper of 78cm coming aboard. Chloe and her farther also encountered a few other species as by catch such as pike, blue throat wrasse and cuttlefish.

Western District
Down the Western District and anglers keen enough to brave the wild weather have taken some impressive tuna to over 100kg. On average those heading out of Portland have had no trouble in finding schools of smaller Southern Bluefin Tuna to 15kg that find it hard to resist a small skirted lure. Apollo Bay has also given up tuna for those prepared to cover a fair amount of water with the tuna showing up anywhere from Marengo to Cape Otway and further.

Wurdee Boluc
Freshwater anglers persisted with Wurdee Boluc and found once again redfin to 45cm willing to hit lures cast around weed beds. The odd Rainbow trout was taken as a by catch with some rainbows reaching 1.5kg.
Lake Bullen Merri started to fire up this past week with anglers trolling hard body lures finding excellent football shaped rainbow trout to 2kg. As the weather continues to cool the fishing should really improve in our western district lakes.

Eucumbene River
Heading up to the Snowy Mountains to Eucumbene River late last week Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt along with Dylan Pace and Nathan Grass were meet with some of the finest trout fishing Australia has to offer. Walking the banks of the river the trio were meet with numerous well-conditioned brown trout to 8lb that quickly snapped up there glow bug nymph rig. Some of the most memorable trout included Adam’s 8lb buck brown that in a foot of water gave an incredible fight.

Thredbo River
Across the road so to speak in the Thredbo River Bob Hentosz took an excellent condition 8 pound rainbow trout on a rapala F7. Andrew Orchard is also present at the Thredbo River and banked a fantastic conditioned brook trout again on a hard body lure.

Next Week
Next week let’s hope the wind backs off which should allow anglers with tuna on their mind to get a much needed fix and with the large barrel tuna pushing further east we may see them once again appear in our own backyard. Whiting anglers continue to focus on Queenscliff though to St Leonards with fresh squid as bait. For those wanting to tangle with a trout look a West Barwon with the water levels down it allows for new ground to be covered.
