Report 1/6/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Jun 03, 2016 2:52 pm

The onset of cold weather has encouraged anglers seeking the elusive winter snapper to venture out onto Corio Bay. After locating a few promising marks on his sounder Andrew Whitford set anchor in Corio Bay. After hearing the drag on one of his reels scream to life Andrew quickly reached for his rod, attached to the other end was an 8.76KG snapper that had devoured his pilchard as bait. Andrew was able to subdue the snapper that gave him a run for his money on 4kg line. Also making the most of local snapper was Brenton Gregory who spent a few hours recently fishing land based in Corio Bay. Using squid as bait Brenton has had success landing snapper measuring in at 82cm. When chasing snapper this time of year persistence in key to success along with keeping warm!

Queenscliff
Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore was at it again this week chasing whiting at the grass beds at Queenscliff. Michael again boated a bag limit capture of whiting with some specimens over 40cm in length. With a bag of whiting in his boat Michael then went on to restock his supply of squid where over at the mouth of Swan Bay he had no trouble in catching 10 squid.

ST Leonards
Over at St Leonards large schools of whiting are holding strong with the area now known as Bourke St still a solid producer. Anglers able to find a clear sand patch surrounded by grass beds are achieving the better results with pippie as bait the standout. The pier still gave up good numbers of whiting and squid during the week with those fishing into the night finding better numbers of both species.

Barwon Estuary
The Barwon Estuary once again saw anglers encounter some fantastic Silver Trevally throughout the whole estuary system. Small whiting and salmon were a by catch but anglers fishing pilchard fillet did find trevally to 40cm. Black bream were also on the cards for those going to the effort to pump bass yabbies.

Surf Coast
Down the surf beaches large Australian Salmon have been schooling and anglers fishing half way though the run in tide have beached fish to 2.5kg casting lures. Best beaches have been 13th and Bancoora with reports of those pushing further west also find salmon.

Western District
The Western District held excellent tuna fishing when the weather allowed. Apollo Bay produced both school tuna and large barrel tuna (tuna over 100kg) for those fishing the reefs out from Cape Otway. Port Fairy and Portland also saw their fair share of tuna taken as well with some days the school tuna devouring large 10inch skirted lures. Trent Schiller along with Brenno Edwards fished one of the estuary system down the western district last week where Brenno took an excellent mulloway of 85cm on a soft plastic.

Daylesford
Whitey ventured up to Dayleford recently where fishing a few of the surrounding water ways he took superb redfin to 47cm.

Lake Toolondo
Up at Lake Toolondo Trevor Homes, Michael Evans & Ben Young recently spent some time casting lures around the lake where the guys caught & released solid brown trout along with a Rainbow trout and a redfin. Both soft plastics and hard body lures worked a treat.

Thredbo River
Back up at the Thredbo River Andrew Orchard has been able to bank some of the most impressive Brook Trout Australia has to offer with fish reaching 50cm and 2.5kg. Casting hard body lures has been the undoing for the Brook trout Andrew has banked.

Next Week
Next week it appears the weather is settling down which should allow anglers to head out on the tuna, Port Fairy is your best bet for school sized fish. Whiting from Queenscliff to St Leonards should remain productive along with squid. Freshwater anglers keep Lake Purrumbete and Bullen Merri in mind as these lakes could switch on at any time now.
