St Leonards
Arriving at St Leonards Sunday afternoon Peri Stavropoulos and Josh Whitford set out in search of squid and whiting. After boating a few squid Peri and Josh decided to chase a whiting or two, while making a few moves to locate the fish the pair marked up some excellent arches on the sounder. Quickly deploying a pilchard down to the intriguing marks resulted in a rod quickly springing to life. After an intense battle on whiting tackle a snapper of about 6.5kg made it aboard.

Queenscliff continued to provide anglers with whiting for those fishing the grass beds and the faster flowing water. Tenderised squid and pippie did the trick fished around a tide change. Those moving out to deeper water along the channel edges did encounter gummy shark although not always of a large size.

Barwon Estuary
Barwon Estuary is still holding great numbers of silver trevally, mullet and whiting for those fishing between the Ozone Jetty and Sheepwash. Small baits such as prawn and pippie resulted in plenty of fish especially on a run in tide.

Clifton Springs
Clifton Springs saw plenty of squid come to anglers drifting over shallow weed beds using small 2.5 size jigs. Ian Bolster took a nice bag of squid from the Curlewis Bank late Saturday afternoon again casting 2.5 sized jigs. Whiting came to anglers fishing out from the Old Dell in 6 meters of water using lightly weighted pipis.

Surf Coast
Down the surf coast spinning from the surf worked well with anglers beaching Australian Salmon to 2kg. Wading out on an incoming tide and casting 25gram metal lure was a popular tactic that worked well. Anglers fishing from the rock platforms also found success when the swell was not too large. Trent Schiller was casting hardbody lures & soft plastics around one of the small estuary systems down the Surf Coast way where he took a chucky black bream of 43cm.

Port Fairy
Anglers seeking tuna had to contend with strong winds but when an opportunity appeared those trolling Rapala X-rap lures in 70 meters of water between Port Fairy and Portland boated Southern Bluefin Tuna to 15kg.

Hopkins River
Monday morning Adam Van Der Lugt and I headed down to the Hopkins River. Marking plenty of schooled fish towards the bottom reaches of the river we found bream and estuary perch to 43cm willing to devour vibe style lures.

West Barwon Res
Freshwater fisho’s looked to West Barwon Reservoir where casting soft plastics along the upper arms of the reservoir they took well-conditioned brown trout. With the lake still low it’s worth the walk with some of the best scenery the Otway’s has to offer.

Hepburn Lagoon
Heading up to Hepburn Lagoon over the weekend Duane Tribe took a two pound Rainbow Trout on fly and had some interest from a few other trout. Duane mentioned his mate also fishing fly alongside dropped a larger specimen.

Lake Toolondo
Trevor Holmes from Victorian Inland Charters fished with Alan Greig. Alan who is battling a serious illness made the effort to chase the trophy brown trout of Lake Toolondo. After casting an OSP bent minnows for some time Allan came up tight on a Brown Trout of 2.9kg that gave an excellent account of itself.

Next Week
Next Week anglers wanting to wet a line keep the Barwon Estuary in mind for whiting and mullet with those prepared to pump live bait such as bass yabbies in with a shot for bream and mulloway. Squid are plentiful thought the whole Bellarine Peninsula and a great option on the calm days. Freshwater anglers look to Lake Purrumbete and Bullen Merri trolling at first light, for trout and Chinook Salmon.
