Report 25/11/16

All our rivers continue to drop,I went down to the murray this morning at its really starting to clear up and it appears that we have dodged the black water with oxygen levels at a safe level. But the same cant be said for the Wakool,Edward and Niemar systems which are still suffering from the blackwater.Fresh water is being pushed down both the wakool and edward rivers, which will help the remaining fish that are still alive.
Most of the "Dirty" in the Edward river is coming out of the Billabong, the oxygen level at Stephens weir has been at 5% for over a week, which is good news for the fish.

THE MURRAY RIVER:
- Anglers have been landing yellas on bait in the swan hill area with one angler landing 15 on worms a week ago and good size shrimp are also being caught, which is a good sign.

LAKE CHARM:
- Had a lake charm local in on monday who said that the reddies are still biting, saying he caught 8 on the saturday trolling 50mm white lure with spots on it. He said another angler landed 23 redfin on the sunday all caught on minnows,a lot of the fish were small but there were a few decent size fish amongst them.A few fish have been picked up using bladed spinners.

KANGAROO LAKE:
- Victorian Fisheries conducted a fish survey last saturday with boats fishing around the man-made structures put into the lake a couple of years ago.Fishing was a bit slow on the day but 13 boats caught 30 fish, with 10 caught near the structures.A big cod was detected on a fish finder, sitting in a whole near one of the structures,it would be one of the many big cod in the lake after they were released into the lake as 23cm fingerlings 8-10 yrs ago.
The regulator is still producing yellas on bibless vibes and yabbies have been a good choice of bait for those fishing in the lake near the outlet.

MURRAY COD SEASON:

One week away from the start and I am getting heaps of calls enquiring about river conditions and camping sites.Unfortunately a lot of the low lying camping sites are under water and if the're not they will still be muddy-we need some hot weather to dry them out.
Boat launching will be restricted to boat ramps until the river banks dry out.
Everyone is hoping that the Murray river from Barham right through to Kenley still holds good numbers of cod,as we hav'nt seen the fish kills this time like we did in 2010/11.
There are caravan parks right on the river with the Riverside caravan park at swan hill and the Pental Island caravan park, which is approx 7ks out of swan hill.
Another option is Kangaroo Lake , Lake Charm and Racecourse Lake which are stocked with big cod, with several fish up to a metre plus caught over the past seasons and both lakes have caravan parks on them.
I will have plenty of yabbies,scrubworms,A1 and red worms and I will have a few bardi grubs as well as wood grubs that come from the roots of trees, and they do catch fish-they are identical to a bardi grub.
