Report 22/12/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Dec 23, 2016 1:21 pm

The years tick by…every one different and every one exciting on the piscatorial front. You never know exactly what is just around the corner, what fish will be in numbers for the year and which species will be slow. I guess that’s what keeps fishing exciting.

This will be our final report for the year. Being on the peninsula the next 6 weeks is a very busy time with the tourists and holidaymakers, so it’s our turn to sign off and spend a bit of time with the customers.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed photos and fishing reports over the year, especially those stalwarts, some of our best customers who appear in our reports week in and week out – you know who you are!

Thanks also to all of you who visit the shop, attend our sales and keep our little shop on the peninsula, busy. We always appreciate your business.

Now onto the fishing….

It has been a great round-off to the year. Whiting have continued in abundance, although the patch that was hanging around off Rosebud has gone a little slow this week.

Gummys shark reports have been solid these last two months and we have seen fish up to 30kg. There is no doubt that November and December are good months for gummies – January can be too but I think night time fishing is the go at this time of year due to the amount of boat traffic.

We have also seen more kingfish caught this week in and around the heads area, which suggests we might be in for a good season. It hasn’t started this early the last couple of years – so good signs. Couple that with the fact that kings have been caught at Mordi Pier, seen at Sorrento, Rosebud and other areas in the bay and I am thinking it might be time to respool the king outfits!

Land based, we have seen plenty of Tommy Rough hanging around at Rosebud pier. Gars have also been in pretty solid numbers at many of the piers down the peninsula. On the rocks at Mt Martha around fishies beach, there have also been some good size squid with hoods around 35cm. Just quickly, we also have maggots back in stock…. So if you wish to target some of the float species, come grab a pack. They are one of the deadliest baits on the pier.

Brad Parkinson caught these beautiful frost fish while fishing down off Warnambool.

A huge congrats to the YouFish crew, Dave Standing And Adrian Lieutier who took an unbelieveable Mulloway from the murky waters of westernport. At 45.8kg this has to be one of the bigger mulloway we have seen come from the 'port.
