Report 5/2/16

It’s amazing how the peninsula hits the brakes the moment that school goes back! The last week has felt very quiet after a bustling January, as everybody settles back into their normal routines. With the summer crowds departing, the reports slowed a bit this week, however there were some great captures of fish, if not as many.

Highlight this week was again some really nice captures of kings both offshore and inside the heads area. The average size of the fish has increased from a month ago with plenty in the 6 -10kg range now.

The kingfish are a very exciting fishery for not only those who live on the Mornington & Bellarine peninsula but really for all Melburnians as they represent a genuine sport fish right on our door step. This week the fish have been taken using a number of methods – jigs, live baits and even surface lures.

Our good mate Baz at Southern Sport and Game Fishing Charters (0419 851 881) has had a ripper of a week taking fish on all the above mentioned techniques. In one session he caught as many as eight fish, many of which were around the 8kg mark.

Customer Con and Jeremy Sakkas fished at Balcombe Creek over a couple of evening sessions. The boys landed 18 fish in two nights. Most of the fish were 30cm – 35cm taken on prawn.

Big schools of salmon are still being found around the rip on the run out tide. Jarrod Day from Compleat Angler HO shows off a couple of nice fish taken on the troll.

Phil from RIP Fishing Charters (0438 847 791) has been catching good bunches of pinkies for his customers. These fish will be in good numbers righrt through until May now and are well worth a feed. Any reefy area should produce these fish, going early or late will help you catch them though.
