Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Oct 05, 2018 3:51 pm

Fishing report with thanks from the Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club

With the tides favourable good snapper and morwong are again on the bite. Best areas are between 15 and 20 fathoms off Lennards, North Head and Boyds Tower. Out of the ordinary; Ron Achison reports hooking up and releasing a plus 200kg sunfish at 40 fathoms off Twofold Bay To the north past Haycock and Long Point flathead are on the chew, try SE of Turingal Headland, off White Rock, The Tathra Hotel, and Bithrys further north. A good starting point is the 15 fathom line out to 20 fathoms.

With the full moon Gummys have been active. Best areas are on the inshore side of the Horseshoe Reef south of Haycock and beside the Pinnacles reef near Bithrys.

Good salmon are sporadic but have been reported off local beaches.

October is the month when we anticipate estuary fish will become active with rising water temperatures. Relatively large tailor are abundant in Merimbula Lake – try metal spinners – there are trevally and some dusky flathead activity.

At the Bega River good Tailor are schooling all through the estuaries including Merimbula Lake and on Main Beach. Best time for Tailor in the estuaries and beaches is early morning or evening. Try spinning with metal lures. Merimbula Lake has returned a few Dusky Flathead best using soft plastics. ream and estuary perch remain active try the rock wall just up from the launching ramp. Soft plastics, hard bodies and peeled prawns often the best baits.

Tight lines till next week.
