Report 12/10/18

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Oct 12, 2018 2:08 pm

Thanks to Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Fishing Club for this report

Game anglers are excited to hear that Southern Bluefin Tuna have been sighted off Bunga headland at the second drop off (150’ 25”E). Most fish seem about 20kg plus, although some larger ones have been noted. For a long while the only Southern Bluefin we have heard of were 180-200km off shore falling to longliners. Fish at the shelf come within range of local and visiting game anglers.

Ocean flathead are responding to warmer waters (+16 degrees). Best areas are out of Kianinny and to the north off Baronda headland, try 15 fathoms out to 20 fathoms. Also try SE of Turingal Headland, off White Rock, and the Tathra Hotel. Snapper and morwong are available off our local reefs. Best areas are between 15 and 20 fathoms off Lennards, North Head and Boyds Tower. Graham Bywaters reports good salmon on Tura Beach just south of the headland. Good salmon are also reported on North Tura beach just south of Bournda Island.

In the estuaries soft plastics are great for trevally, bream and dusky flathead but at present we are competing with swarms of voracious tailor. Relatively large tailor are abundant in the lakes and Bega River (though with the entrance closed it is also a lake) – try metal spinners. At the Bega River, good bream and estuary perch are active, try the rock wall just up from the launching ramp. A 90cm dusky flathead was caught and released just at the Bega launching ramp, one early morning, showing that trophy fish are starting to come on the chew.
