Preparation for Merimbula’s Artificial Reef is well ahead of schedule with a Hydrographic survey already completed. Preliminary results show an unobstructed sandy bottom at a suitable depth just half a kilometer south of Long Point. Lots of Tourists, Kingfish, Snapper and Mowong to come!
Catches of Snapper and Morwong are reported from our local reefs including Long Point, Haycock, Lennards Island and Mowarry Point. Ocean Flathead remain on the chew at the usual spots off Bithrys, White Rock, Bournda Island and Tura Headland.

There are some large Kingfish from Mowarry Point, Boyd’s Tower, Lennards, Haycock, Long Point and Short Point, although not in large numbers. Night fishing off Merimbula Beach at the sticks opposite the Airport is seeing good Salmon and large Tailor.

Seen off the Merimbula Wharf were thick schools of Luderick at surface during their spawning run. A few days later the Luderick were back to their usual habits and a few were landed. Both Luderick and Drummer are available from the rocks at Merimbula, Short Point and Tura Headland. Usual baits are cabbage weed and cunjevoi.

In the estuaries temperatures are falling. Pambula Lake remains the warmest with great Trevally and Salmon moving in to spawn near the entrance. In all the estuaries Dusky Flathead as well as Trevally, Tailor & Bream can be found. Soft plastics or burley and pilchards are the way to go. Good sized Blue Swimmer crabs remain in both the Merimbula and Pambula Lakes.

Coming events include the Tri-Club Challenge “The Grudge Match” this coming weekend. A points based challenge between the three Clubs: Merimbula, Pambula and Eden, hosted this year by Eden Amateur Fishing Club. The following weekend sees Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club’s annual Snapper Classic with a magnificent first prize of $1,000 cash due to support by Caltex Merimbula . In early June the Club’s major Game Fishing event; the Merimbula Open Game Fishing Tournament kicks off on the 10th.
