Report 29/6/17

Local Reefs continue to fish well for Snapper and Morwong

Offshore the Whale migration northwards continues and reports from Longliners lets us know that well out 50kg Bluefin Tuna are plentiful. Of more immediate interest is the report that daylight Broadbill Swordfish angling is achieving results from local canyons.
Snapper and Morwong are on the chew along our local reefs with early morning and evening prime fishing times. Of note are increasing hook ups of large Port Jackson Sharks all the way from White Rock near Kianinny to North Head off Eden, in particular. This time last year a rare event, now it is not unusual for 5 or more during a session. Port Jacksons are protected and no one wants to catch them but why are there so many now being caught? Schools of Couta remain a problem for reef fishers and Chinamen Leatherjackets are a problem over the Flathead grounds north of Bournda.
With the waters cooling Slimey Mackerel have deserted the Merimbula Fishing Platform. A few Salmon are about early and only an occasional squid. No sign yet of large Kingfish.

Reports from the Bega River, which remains open, include great Dusky Flathead along the shallows together with some very large Whiting. Best results when the wind ruffles the surface, try poppers and soft plastics. Bream remain on the bite upstream from the launching ramp. Best bait is without doubt nippers. In Merimbula and Pambula Lakes Trevally, Bream, Tailor and good size Mullet remain on the bite.
The FishingClubs next event is the 25th Merimbula Broadbill & 5th Southern Bluefin Tournament scheduled for 7-10 & 14-17 July. Now that the “secret” of daylight Broadbill capture has been publicized, Merimbula’s Tournament provides an excellent opportunity for keen anglers to successfully make daylight captures off the far south coast of NSW.
