Report 21/7/17

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Jul 21, 2017 2:14 pm

With the moon full last weekend Gummy sharks remained active and good catches were reported from Tathra to Haycock off Merimbula. Some large fish are reported, close to the 15kg mark. Great catches of Flathead have been taken along the edge of the inner reef south from White Rock and also from Bournda Island with no significant Chinamen Leatherjacket problems. Snapper and Morwong remain about the reefs. Both soft plastics and pilchard baits are very effective. Best results come from anchoring and using a burley bomb in the current.

A few Salmon are about early at the Merimbula Fishing Platform. A few good sized Calamari Squid have also reported using light coloured No. 3 jigs. Along the beaches northwards from Aslings at Eden to Tathra, Salmon are about early on and at dusk good size Tailor come on the chew. Silver spinners or gang hooked pilchards are the go. The Club’s next event is a social “Salmon Sunday” scheduled for 30 July. Salmon will be brought in for weighing to the Clubhouse at Spencer Park to be followed by a Weber BBQ.

In the Merimbula front lake the run-in from the sea is the time for Trevally and Bream over the shallows. Nippers without a sinker or soft plastics will get results. Reports from the Bega River, which remains open, include some large Bream well up-stream on soft plastics. At Pambula; Trevally, Bream, Tailor remain on the bite. At the Pambula River Mouth now is a good time to troll and spin for Australian Salmon.
