Report 8/8/17

Good Morwong and Snapper continue their run at the Haycock reef.

Morwong and Snapper remain about the reefs with some exceptional size Morwong reported from the Haycock Reef. Both soft plastics and pilchard baits are very effective. Best results come from anchoring and using a burley bomb in the current. Flathead have become patchy and need to be found but remain our staple with catches reported all along the coast from the Horsehoe Reef area to north of Tathra. As the moon fills so we can expect catches of Gummy Shark to improve.

Some lovely Garfish have been taken from the Merimbula Fishing Platform. For success anglers need burley, whitebait and a very small garfish hook beneath a float which can be cast well out. A few good sized Calamari Squid have also reported using light coloured No. 3 jigs. There has also been a return of some Slimy Mackerel, perhaps a fore tend for the Kingfish arrival?

With little surf and high tide during the middle of the day the only Salmon landed came from before daylight confirming last week’s advice to fish “early on”. Anglers were plagued by Sand Crabs once the sun had risen. When high tide is early morning and evening then much better Salmon catches are likely off our beaches.

Heavy rain should see better catches in the river mouth areas for the Bega River and Merimbula and Pambula Lakes. Most active at present are Tailor with some big fish responding to trolled lures across the shark hole at Pambula. The Bega River remains open so warmer waters can be found on the run-in near the entrance as for the Merimbula front lake. This is the time for Trevally and Bream over the shallows. Nippers without a sinker or soft plastics will get results.
