Snapper on the chew off Long Point

Whales are abundant enjoying their southerly migration and possibly feeding on the reported large schools of bait fish off Bournda and Tura Beach. Windy conditions have seen the whales really active and putting on a great display. for our local watching and our Whale Charters.

During a break in last week’s winds local charter boat Reel Affair reported Snapper and Morwong on the bite at Long Point and Hunter Reef. Lots of the Snapper were over 2kg and for this area these are truly magnificent fish. Ocean temperatures are rising slowly with an average of 15 degrees and Ocean Flathead are beginning to make an appearance; try off Tathra and Tura Beach at 18 fathoms and Haycock at 25 fathoms. Schools of Kingfish are again reported from the Long Point area. Good numbers of Salmon have reported from Aslings Beach near Eden, best time just after dark when Tailor can also be taken. Ideal bait is a full size pilchard on gang hooks. Often the larger Salmon take a popper mounted above the bait.
In Merimbula and Pambula Lakes Bream and Trevally together with Dusky Flathead are now coming on the bite, remember to fish the edges of structures or channels. Soft plastics like the red worm bring good results. Bream remain active well up-stream in the Bega River. Soft plastics, hard bodies and peeled prawns remain the best baits. Tailor are relatively abundant early morning and late afternoon.

Garfish remain in the Pambula River near the Sharkhole. Bread crumb burley is needed and using a shallow float line with a small piece of prawn or whitebait brings good results. Mullet can be sourced in the same way.
