Report 20/5/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri May 20, 2016 12:44 pm

Those evil gusty westerly winds plagued us for the majority of this week. And after a quick glance at the latest seabreeze update the upcoming week isn’t looking much better, Saturday looks like the weather break if you’re looking to throw a line in in some sort of semi comfort. It looks as though there will be a bit of swell around however the winds are meant to subside maybe giving anglers the opportunity to head wide in search of those ever elusive yellowfin tuna.

After talking to a few guys today it sounds as though the long-lining fleet from Ulladulla is preparing to head out. Rigging new lines, changing leaders and filling up bait tanks is a pretty good indication that something is about to go down! So... fingers crossed the fish will be in reach of amateur anglers in there smaller boats. Last reports I’ve heard are saying that there are still marlin on the shelf, which seriously for this time of year is a bit unusual. I don’t think it will be too long though before we see some golden yellow sickles starting to show on facebook and Instagram pages from fisho’s up and down the coast. The last day of the Bermi comp last weekend saw a few fish caught so hopefully good things to come. If you’re after a top yellowfin lure we have a pretty good range of Polukai, Fatboy and now some Southern Cross jet heads in some awesome colours on the shelves!

If you’ve been in the Bay of late you would have noticed the very clear water packed with oodles and oodles of bait. There are also some good fish smashing these bait schools, big tailor, bonito and reports of some larger tuna type looking fish have been sighted ripping through these schools as close in as Vincentia. The squid are still on the chew in the Bay, but unfortunately so are the leather jackets so cheaper jigs people are definitely on the cards. Actually Ile tell ya what guys and gals for the next week if you mention this report when you come inshore to buy some jigs we will give you a generous 20% off on all squid jigs just to help compensate for your loses due to the jackets!

The water in the river is also fairly clear, it hasn’t affected the fishing though with some nice table sized lizards and still some good Jew throughout the lower reaches. Those killer squidgy prawns are still doing the job on both species, the 80mm paddle tail prawn rigged with a 1/4oz-2/0 jig head is unbelievable on the flatties and is still big enough to interest a feeding Jew, but if you’re looking to target more just the Jewies try the 110mm prawn with a 3/8oz-4/0 jig head, the big paddle tail puts out heaps of vibration and smeared with the good old S-Factor it’s a hard call for them to turn one up when put in front of their nose!

If you’re heading to the snowy region over the next few weeks it sounds as though 1, there are plenty of fish to be caught as they move up the Eucumbene River with recent rains improving the river to a respectable flow and 2, make sure you take the winter woollies coz it’s gunna be cold! Some nice fish have already been caught as the crowds begin to descend on this iconic trophy trout Mecca! Each year trout upwards of 10lb are caught and I’m sure this year will be no different, we have plenty of glow bugs and nymphs in stock if you’re heading that way! And with plenty of fisho’s from our region heading down over the next few weeks before the close in June we should have fairly accurate reports of what’s happening so call in or give us a buzz for all the good info!

Enjoy the rest of your week and hopefully a good day on Saturday before the weather comes back with a vengeance next week.
