Report 27/5/16

For all those avid trout fisho’s in search of that trophy brown trout in excess of 10lb now is definitely the time to pack those winter woollies, stock up on glow bugs and nymphs and head for the pretty little township of Adaminaby. For most of the year the town of Adaminaby is pretty much a forgotten place but come this time of year when the weather cools and a bit of rain falls, trout fisho’s alike converge on this usually quiet town and make it home for several weeks on and off until the close of the trout season at the end of the June long weekend. These anglers are in search of the big brown trout that reside in the cool waters of Lake Eucumbene over the summer months before they begin their journey up the Eucumbene River for their annual spawn run this time of year.

From now until the close, runs of fish will move up the river depending mainly on rainfall, and with the level of the river changing daily you really do need your finger on the pulse to get the best conditions for your chance to snare one of these trophy fish. Every year plenty of fisho’s from our area head down there for a change of pace from the usual saltwater fishing they have become accustomed to, and many returning with stories and pics of huge brown trout and tales of larger fish seen and lost along the way! And I think first timers often come back quite surprised at how much fun they actually had and how hard these big browns fight on the light tackle. It’s definitely worth a try if you’re looking for something new to test your skills!

On the local scene not too much has changed from last week’s report, wind, wind and more wind and it actually looks as though it’s going to get worse before it gets better with winds up around the 35+ knots forecast for over the weekend on top of a 4.5 metre sea. Looks like a weekend in the shed boys or maybe at the movies with the wife/partner earning those brownie points for when this horrid weather finally subsides. There was a small window of opportunity last Saturday for fisho’s to get offshore for a bit of fun and Roy Brooks from Sea lady Charters made the most of conditions putting some keen fisho’s onto some nice kings jigging at the Block with 300gram jigs, young tom Shakco and dad Allan bagged some nice fish for their day out, well done lads!

Gavin decided he would have the Saturday morning off to take his daughter Abbey fishing, drifting off the heads surf club for some legal sized flathead wasn’t a bad way to spend the morning for a father and daughter bonding session. This is a great way to get the kids into fishing and get them used to the outside conditions, and also catch a feed of these great table fish!

If you’re having withdrawals and are desperate for a fish you may get a little bit of shelter in St Georges Basin around the Erowal Bay area where there have been a few nice bream and some pan sized snapper moving into guy’s burley trails of late evening into the night, if you can handle the cold!

In the Shoalhaven it’s that time of year where there should be some big black bream haunting the snags of the infamous Broughten Creek. Both bass and estuary perch also frequent these snags as they move further down the system for their spawn run. Remember to return these guys to the water ASAP as we are now in the closed season for those two species. Again this location may also offer some shelter from the current conditions.

If you have any queries on anything fishing please don’t hesitate to call us or drop into the shop for our friendly service and expert advice, we have everything for fishing whether it be for garfish or marlin.

Be good and stay safe.
