Report 14/10/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Oct 14, 2016 3:44 pm

It was a bit of a mixed weekend of weather for fishing, we had one day of strong southerly winds and ½ a day of howling north/north easterly winds. But hey it was the weekend after all and there was a bream comp on as well so chances are it was always going to be windy ;-). It doesn’t mean it had to stick around for the next two days though. And now just looking at the forecast it looks as though today and Friday are going to be the only reasonable days wind wise that is to get out and have a fish in some sort of comfort!

Well it sounds as though the bream guys did it pretty tuff on both days of the Atomic Southern Bream Series grand final...day one on the river from 95% of reports I’ve heard and read was one of the hardest days bream fishing they had experienced and day two on the Basin wasn’t much better...there was of course some nice bi-catch caught which any other day you would be happy to catch but in a bream tournament bi-catch is more a pest than anything else. Some nice flatty‘s were part of the bi-catch along with estuary perch in the river. Anyway well done to all who made the grand final and a big congrats to the winners and place getters on what was a couple of tuff days fishing...I believe the fish in the river came from both The Canal and The Animal Park rocks whilst in the Basin the majority of fish were caught in the deeper water. There has been a couple of nice Jewies caught in there recently too and on some light tackle, I’ve heard of a couple of instances over the past couple of weeks of guys throwing small lures for bream and hooking a Jew on the 4lb gear only to spend the next couple of hours trying to raise its head....and in both instances they succeeded! Which just goes to show how good the tackle is in this day and age EG; rod’s reels and line...to be able to catch a fish of around 10-15kg on your ultra light bream gear this along with angler skill, the fish just don’t stand a chance anymore!

Offshore the reds have finally started to appear in numbers in close with plenty of fish in the one to two kilo range...If you are looking for something new to throw at these guys in the way of lures, come into the shop and check out the new colours in the 5” and 7” Gulp Jerk Shads and the new style Gulp 5” Jigging Shrimp with a prawn body and a long flat curly tail with plenty of action! I can see this one being a real winner in the washes! Alternatively if you are looking for yet another angle for the Reds....why not get on board with the Micro Jigging craze....this is coming a very productive way to catch not only Snapper but all sorts of other fish that live in the Snappers environment. In store we have a range of micro jigging tackle to suit your needs with several different rods and although many of you already have a reel that would suit this application one of the new Shimano 4000 CI4 Stradics would be a nice reel to balance out a new rod ;-).

Upcoming events in our area include the national event GONE FISHING DAY which is on Sunday the 16th of October...so that’s this Sunday. You can check that out on the website www.gonefishing.org. On the 30th of October you have the St Georges Basin Flathead Classic which is a great event showcasing our awesome recreational fishery on the Basin. Contact for this event is Drew Sullivan on 0412356305 or Brett Crowe on 0429842309. And on the 12th and 13th of November is the 20th anniversary Lake Yarrunga Challenge bass comp held up at Bendella, Kangaroo Valley. Contact for this event is Rob Halley on 0417220924...We also have entry forms for both comps so you can call into the shop and pick one up off the front counter!

Be good and stay safe and remember go fishing on Sunday, Australia’s national day of fishing...personally I think it should be on a weekday and have it as a public holiday...who agrees?
