If you're heading out for a fish there are plenty around. Our local waters are fishing well for all sorts of species. The Shoalhaven/Crookhaven lower reaches have plenty of jew and flatties while the upper reaches if you're up early enough to beat the boat traffic have plenty of bass and EP's.

St Georges Basin is also fishing well for flatties and jew. It's awesome to see the jew taking off in The Basin with a lot of them being released by anglers who already have enough fish for a feed. With the Basin's entrance so shallow and so long i'm sure a lot of the jew stay in there as resident fish and are caught and released more than once in their lifetime. Whiting are starting to show on the vast area of sandflats surrounding most of the Basin and can be caught on an array of surface lures ranging from small pencil poppers around 40mm up to your larger stick baits of around 70 & 80 mm, it really depends on the day with whats working so it's a matter of having a range of colours and sizes.

In Jervis Bay there have been big numbers of rat kings around the entrance with the occasional bigger fish getting in on the action. These smaller fish are awesome fun if you down size your tackle, but remember 90% of them will be under the legal size limit of 65cm so they must be returned to the water. If you are after a feed of flatty's the grounds out the front of the bay are producing good numbers of reasonable size fish. Squid caught inside the bay are as good a bait as any for the flatties and are in abundance at present.

Remember the next few weeks are going to be pretty crazy in out local waters at the boat ramps and on the roads so everyone just needs to slow down, take a breath and be patient. Nothing more ruins a relaxing days fishing than having an argument at the ramp before you even get on the water.

Local Shimano angler Wal Balzin displaying a nice Basin jew just shy of the 1 metre mark he caught recently. The lure of choice looks to be the old faithful black and gold Squidgy fish. This lure has with out a doubt accounted for more jew than any over the years.
