Congratulations to all the teams fishing the Flathead Challenge over the weekend. Another awesome competition put together from the boys at Reel It In.
The flathead fishing has been pretty tough over the weekend as the comp showed. Fish both days being patchy.
For anglers targeting fish in the bottom lake try fishing along the main channel out towards John Bull or the weed banks along the flat edge in Howe bight. Here fishing soft plastics in prawn or curl tail styles defiantly producing some good fish.

Allen’s Head also producing a few fish. Here they have been fewer fish but the size has been very good. Here was where the comps biggest fish of 86cm was taken. Try using slightly larger lures and put in the time for the fish as the rewards are worth it.
Top lake try fishing where the bait is. Look for prawn or shrimp activity and fish around that. Soft plastic paddle tailed lures working a treat along with small hardbodies.

The other go to spot was the drop offs up around Cape Horn and the second Narrows. Try fishing soft plastics back out of the bank into about 20ft of water for best results. Over the weekend this was also where a 94cm jewfish was taken.
As for other fishing the gummy sharks have moved in closer this week with the water finally warming up. Try fishing off the pump shed for the fish. Salted fish fillets best baits.

Flathead offshore have been in close too. 30ft producing some nice sand flathead. Tiger flathead still patchy but a few have started turning up out amongst the gummies.

A few beach fishers also picking up some gummy sharks finally. Fresh salmon the best bait. Fishing at night the best method.
Bream well up onto flats and feeding hard. Try using surface walk the dog style lures or hardbodied minnows. Fish the shallows when the wind is up and try the edges if it is glassed out.

Edges and snags also producing the bream all throughout the lake. Weightless soft plastics or light hardbodied minnows taking the better fish.
For tailor try trolling around John Bull or Goodwin Sands with small metal lures.

Happy Fishing!
