Report 24/11/17

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Nov 24, 2017 1:02 pm

We are in the heart of snapper season now and it's great to see some quality reports of big snapper coming through the store. The northern end of PPB still seems to be one of the more consistent spots however the fishing more locally from Black Rock to Mordialloc has also ramped up. However it's the big Western Port whiting that stole the attention of the boys in the shop this week with a cracking session on big whiting Sunday after work. It's great to see the whiting fishing slowly start to fire up and we are sure it's going to be a cracker season on them as well. This weeks report has also seen some nice gummy shark filtering through and some lovely crays from the seasons opening.

PORT PHILLIP BAY

Mason Schulze has been getting stuck into the snapper again reporting some terrific captures coming from the Northern end of PPB. Fishing around Williamstown and St Kilda Mason has been getting lovely bags of snapper in 10-14m of water. Mason reports that the afternoon bite has been the best with the fish coming on the chew for the last hour of light.

We received the following report from Keysborough Angling Club: "Last Sunday 20 members of our club fished Port Phillip Bay. Weather conditions were ideal.
20 fish were brought back to the scales for a total weight of 48.43Kg. This then equated as an average fish of 2.42Kg. Species count: 15 Snapper; 1 Pinkie; 1 Gummy Shark and 3 Flathead. Heaviest snapper was Peter Bouboulis at 4.46Kg.

Chris O'Connell caught Another nice 75cm Snapper caught first light at williamstown using a snapper snatcher rig with pilchard in 5m of water.

Lee Rayner, Lee Mcduffie and Mitch Bolger had an awesome session on the whiting Sunday evening. Fishing around the middle spit of westernport the boys found some nice fat fish to 46cm. They needed a lot of burley to get the fish going whilst using pippies and baby bottle squid as bait.

5PortPhilGum.jpg
Young gun Jett Guiney caught this PB gummy weighing in at 7 kg out from Stony Point on the weekend.

We have also had some reports of some great squid fishing off Flinders over the past week with some terrific sized models still getting about. These reports have come from the deeper water from 8-12m. The Deep model evergreen squid jigs are the perfect jig for fishing those deeper areas with a bit of flow.

OFFSHORE

The opening of cray season has seen a lot of keen divers out on the water. With some magnificent dive conditions over the past week many of the guys have been catching some great crays like the ones caught by Aaron Habgood and crew (pictured above). There has also been the odd report of kingfish coming from offshore with a few confirmed captures coming from Waratah Bay and surrounds.
