The fishing over the past week has been typical of Summer fishing, and that is unbelievable. The whiting fishing has been nothing short of exceptional especially from Westernport with great numbers and great sized fish being taken regularly by customers. The snapper continue to be caught for those still targeting them and the shark fishing has also really kicked into gear. Kingfish continue to be caught right along our coastlines as well as at the entrance to both our bays. Furthermore the South West Coast has seen a predictable return of great sized school bluefin tuna with fish from 20kg to 30kg caught right along the coast from Portland through to Warrnambool. It's great to see the return of these fish and look for them to hang around well into summer.
However it is the beginning of the Marlin season down the east coast that has a lot of anglers very excited for the months ahead. There has been some decent reports and some consistent catches occurring from places such as Eden, Bermagui and Narooma. We have had many customers through the store preparing for the season that is upon as. Now is certainly the time to ensure that all your gear is in check as it looks like there is going to be some phenomenal game fishing just around the corner. If the prominent Marlin bite isn't enough to get the game fisho excited than the prospect of an early sword definitely will! Customers Ari, Andrew and George caught a true sea monster and early season sword that tipped the scales down to 275kg!
Port Phillip Bay
There has been some excellent pinkie snapper fishing coming from our more local waters off Black Rock, Rickets Point ect. Those still targeting the snapper have found some fish in the deeper water approx 21m. The last week has seen the first of the local whiting reports start filtering through the store with some good bags being caught here and there. The whiting fishing down the southern end of the bay has been far more consistent with places such as St leonards and Rye producing bag limit catches. There has also been some excellent calamari fishing coming out of Queenscliff.
