It’s that time of the year where all things start to happen on the fishing front! Not only is there a good variety of fish being caught but even ‘sightings’ of various species become tackle store talk. A couple of weeks back we heard of a few kingfish that had been seen at piers around the bay – some at Mordialloc, some at Mornington even a couple at Dromana.

Well the king stories turned to reality this week when a few lucky anglers managed to catch some rat kingfish from the Mornington pier. The fish were taken on a lunch-time bite with dead squid on live gar floated out from the pier.

For my money, if you’re a keen yellowtail fisherman, this would probably be all the evidence you need to think that some of the bigger models are probably already here lurking around areas such as the heads and Phillip Island!

In other reports, snapper continue to fish well in the north eastern part of the bay with the 17.5m line off Chelsea and Mordialloc seeing plenty of fish. Closer to home we are still seeing reasonable fishing, especially in the afternoon/evening periods although I think the best of it may still be to come.

A good contingent of Mitcham Angling Club members headed out last week from Hastings and results were pretty good. Pat Adair landed his PB snapper of 3.5kg. Robbie Coker also managed 35 whiting to 44cm. You’ve gotta be pretty happy with that!
