Report 11/3/16

It’s been a nice week with some mild but calm weather and a few hot days to keep the summer-lovers happy. We’ve had a full moon this week which saw some exceptional gummy shark fishing but for the most part all the species that anglers have been chasing over the last month remain in pretty good numbers.

Ben Broomfield who is never too far away from a fish, went out in search of a gummy with mate Matt Garett. After managing a fantastic bag of whiting off Rosebud with fish to 45cm the boys headed to the channel where, on their first drop, put two gummies in the boat in 15 minutes! Fishing done, home time!

In other reports, whiting continue to fish pretty well. We have heard some talk that it has bee a bit slower up the Safety Beach end of the peninsula but Tootgarook, Rye, Blairgowrie and Sorrento are still producing fish in good numbers. Bigger fish have been in the early 40cm range while there are plenty in the mid 35s.

Luke Marchetti at Portsea Pier caught this nice squid during the morning that was 1kg. Caught on the brown Yo-Zuri Shrimp Hunter squid jig. Luke lost another nice Squid about the same size as he was lifting it up onto the Pier. Luke also caught four other squid that were medium size and a Cuttlefish. Dad chipping in with a bag of four himself – all in all a good day!
Interestingly to me – it’s amazing how quickly anglers can come and go on a species. This week we have not seen huge amounts of anglers targeting kingfish although they are no doubt there. It’s worth reminding people that the best fishing for kings in the last two years has been now (end of Feb and early March)…. So don’t lose hope, get out there!
