Report 15/4/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Apr 15, 2016 2:45 pm

We have an absolute stack of pics this week so I am going to get straight into the customer reports. Notable fishing of the week has been on some late season snapper which have been firing off Mt Martha and Monrington. Fish commonly 5kg and over. Other species including squid and gummies have been strong which is great to see.

Matt Cini from Reel Time Fishing Charters has been getting some quality reds while fishing off Mt Martha. In this pic Matt shows off a ripper knobber snapper which he took yesterday with his customers. The general consensus at the moment is the fish that are there are of pretty good quality… so if you didn’t do much fishing for snapper over Spring – now could be your chance!

Jame the Chef got stuck into some very nice calamari last week. Good news for all squid fisherman is that we have seen some genuine quality with some pockets of squid well over 1kg. These have been found in areas as local as Rye and Blairgowrie.
Staff Luke had a weekend casting jigs at Portarlington and Queenscliff landbased. Young Lukey had good success casting 3.5 size jigs getting on to some beauties such as those picture below.
Gummy shark have also been on the go, both here and over in westernport. Mason Shultz and his mate Ted managed to get three gummies in two sessions in the port, with the fish going 6kg, 11kg and 15.5kg. Mason fished out of stony but caught the big gumbo in the western entrance.

Customer Archie and Milo were pretty stoked to land this nice gummy while fishing on the channel off Sorrento last Sunday afternoon. The fish took an eel bait.
Many of our local angler are still enjoying big swags of king George whiting. For me they are still a stand out at the moment with fish being found far and wide.
Tim Hepner was one of those enjoying the whiting. He had a good session fishing off Sorrento on Monday.

Capt’n Baz from Southern Sport and Game Fishing Charters (0419 851 881) has also been smashing big bags of whiting for his customers. Whiting are such a great eating fish, the punters tend to be very happy going home with a good feed of king George!
We had a flood of reports from Out of Town after Easter and the last two weeks of school holidays. Our young staff member, Luke Goldstein, has done a bunch of fishing over the last couple of weeks including taking some nice bream at Mordialloc. He and his good mate Jake and his little brother managed 16 bream to 43cm. The key was using tiny No.6 mustad demon circles and fluoro leader.

Starting off, John Cahill and his better half Lydia Low, did a hit-and-run mission to Eden where they managed to snaffle a couple of really solid kingfish.
