Report 6/5/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri May 13, 2016 5:14 pm

It’s been a challenging week on the fishing front. We have had some big winds and a bit of rain and thunder to boot. Looking outside today you wouldn’t believe it but it has been a pretty hard period for fishing. Consequently, reports were a bit thin this week but we did see a couple of smart anglers use the conditions to their advantage and find fish.

Carl Gustafson was one of those who hit Gunnamatta back beach given the ongoing northerlies this week. He was justly rewarded too with an absolute beast of a beach gummy shark estimated at about 20kg! A terrific reward for heading out when the going is tough!

Ben Calamatta also did the same fishing off the Mornington rocks during a westerly blow which was pushing the waves onshore – the perfect time for a landbased snapper. Again, to his credit Benny managed to take a lovely fish in conditions that most people would avoid!
Young Luke Goldstein has still be at the squid, getting quality bags - if not all big - of squid from the Mt Martha rocks. The Gancraft shacrazy doing the damage in this instance.
Steve and Chris Van Gerven travelled to Marlo last night. This photo was only taken this morning with the boys drifting around offshore for gummy shark, flathead and ling. With wind predicted to be like the picture for a few days - they should have a cracker trip!
Jarrod Day from Compleat Angler HO took it one step further and got away from the salty stuff deciding instead to head in land and fish some of the streams around Mt Baw Baw. Jezza had a day out catching some beautiful spawn run trout. The colours on these fish just spectacular!

Phil and the boys at RIP Fishing Charters ( have been plugging away even in the dodgy conditions and are still managing to come home with bags of fish. Phil has done well finding good schools of pinkies and other reefies offshore while also producing bags of whiting on the way in.
