Fishing this past week has been nothing short of a mission for most people, with gale winds and rain it has put everyone into a bit of a struggle. For those that have made it out, the ports have been fishing very well here in Melbourne with great catches of Gummies up to 12kg and Squid as well. It has certainly been worth the work! Pinkies are once again loosing their minds at Ricketts Point and been most commonly caught on plastic.
Sword fish once again have been absolutely awesome! With the wild weather down here, some customers and staff have found their way to Mallacoota! The fishing has been good with some whopping fish coming in in 197kg and 156kg! If Sword fish in Vic weren't noticeable enough already they are certainly making their mark in Vic now!
The coast has been battered as well but that has seen some phenomenal Tuna fishing start to go down. The fish have made their way in quite close for places like Portland and Port Fairy with most people catching fish from 50-100m. Most fish are being taken on skirts and more commonly on pink skirts of late. Apollo Bay is starting to see some wicked action now with a handful of fish coming in over 100kg! It's certainly all starting to happen now and we can't wait to see where this season goes next once it fully kicks off!
PORT PHILLIP BAY
Port Phillip has been very difficult to fish lately but for those that have managed to get out, the rough weather has brought in a stack of pinkies! Plastics have been a very productive way to target them with the odd 3kg fish coming in. Best locations have been Mount Martha and Ricketts Point. Key plastics has been by far the nuclear chicken in 3.75 inch and the blood worm in a wriggle tail.
Squid have been firing up and although their size is not as big as Western Port, they certainly make up for it with their numbers. Customers have been having no trouble getting their bag around the Western side of the bay on Red and White Foil jigs!
WESTERN PORT
Gummy shark once again has reined in most of the action in the port this week. The fishing has been excellent in the top end of the bay on fresh baits over night in particular. The Gummies have been coming in between 5 and 12 kg!
Whiting have still been fishing very well around middles spit towards the bottom end, once again fresh bait has been key. Squid has been the gun bait and also pippies have done well.
Squid have been on the bite too for those that have been able to make it out in good conditions, Tyabb bank has been seeing good squid up to 40cm in hood length. Primarily on Red or Gold foil jigs.
