Report 12/8/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Aug 12, 2016 5:30 pm

With the tuna beginning to quieten down for the season we have seen our attention turned to the local fishing with fantastic reports of big Gummies and Squid captures throughout both bays. The Squid have been taking size three jigs and above in reds and natural colours (they operate purely on eyesight so bigger the jig the more chance they have of seeing it). As always fishing the sun rise and sun set has been the most successful. As well as the big gummies we have also herd of some big early season snapper being caught up and around top end westernport with craw-fish island being a hot spot.

Port Phillip Bay
Staff member James got out off Mordialloc Saturday morning in his kayak and found some fun little schools of salmon (fantastic gummy baits) as well as some squid. Z Man soft plastics and Evergreen Jigs worked best with the salmon almost going cast for cast!

Aaron Habgood from Reds fishing adventures left Queenscliff headed offshore and searched a new area for some big gumbos. They found 4, landed 3 and lost one at the boat to the bridle. The big girl pictured below was released. Aaron also managed a bag of big squid on the inside reef on the way in.

Western Port Bay
Lee and Lee fished the bottom end of the port on Monday morning between Shoreham and Flinders. They managed a good bag of squid with the 3.5 sized evergreen jigs in red and green prawn and Harimitsu KN doing the damage.

With favorable weather over the weekend for an offshore mission Blakey headed into Bass Strait in search of more big gummy sharks. Needless to say he wasn't dissapointed with this nice fish that they got in 25 m of water. He said they also lost another monster that was part of a double hookup with a seven gill shark. Unfortunately the lines got tangled and the big gummy got cut off.
