Finally, it’s Spring and it’s been great to see a bit of Spring weather this week. We have even been graced with a couple of windless days (shame it has been mid-week however, rather than a weekend). With that said, we are really at the start of the fishing season, my favourite 6-8 months of the year. And what a way to kick it off – jumbo tuna right on our door step!

The talk of the town this week has definitely been the run of barrel tuna that have appeared amongst the ‘zoo’ of activity off Flinders. Along with whales, dolphins and hugs schools of bait some lucky angler have managed to snag a 100kg+ Bluefin tuna from the action.

It’s an amazing story really as this is the second year that we have seen big tuna show up in waters accessible from either Port Phillip or Westernport. Would it be great if this became an annual Spring run we could write into the local fishing calendar!?

Neil Squid Smith was one of those out on the local tuna. He managed a ripper Bluefin while fishing one-up off Flinders….What an effort! Landing a fish like this is impressive in any situation but managing to do it by yourself is a pretty big feet. Neil hooked up on dawn landing the fish in front of the western entrance. Great to see one of the local boys in on the action. Well done squiddy!

So aside from the Tuna craziness, some of the bread and butter, squid and whiting action, has also been keeping anglers pumped up. Both species seem to be fishing incredibly well – which is a great sign for the summer season. Paul Cooney collected a couple of very nice feeds while fishing off Sorrento. As you can see below... plenty of king george to go around.

Calamari have been found all over the place but consistent numbers have been taken from the Pinnace channel. Land based, we have seen plenty off good fishing off Rye and Portsea piers with good numbers of squid for the taking.

Compleat Angler Dandenong staff member Don, tried his luckkand based over in westernport. He had a great little seesion down at Stoney Point managing these nice squid.

Staff Morne plucked a couple of EPs from Devilbend this week. Smallish but good fun on the surface.

We'd would love if you take the time to either email us ( or sms us with your fishing reports, 0421 359 022!
