Report 22/6/17

Post by Nicole Penfold » Thu Jun 29, 2017 2:20 pm

This week we saw another awesome week of sword fishing up the coast. With the great weather we have had the last few weeks it has been fantastic to see so many bigs swords being caught this late into winter. As always, come into the shop for a chat with the boys before your next sword trip.
Down the West coast the Southern Bluefin have still been on the chew with most anglers having no trouble at all finding the big patches of fish. With The Jumbo Bluefin being caught weekly its only a matter of time before they really start to fire up.
On the local scene anglers fishing PPB have been making the most of the light winds for the past week with reports filtering through the shop of great local sessions on the Pinkies, as well as Southern end Whiting and Squid sessions.

Port Phillip Bay
Richard Davis braved the cold conditions and ventured out into the bay where he got onto nice Snapper using fresh squid and whiting heads. Winter can be a great time to be out on the water, as the crowds that are so often prevalent in summer, aren't around and the early morning sunrises are usually spectacular.

Bass Strait
Aaron Habgood of Reds Fishing Adventures, recently had a great morning out on the water with his clients. The guys wanted to chase some Gummies and they certainly weren't disappointed with the mornings results.

Portland
Jack Oliver and crew got stuck into some Amberjacks recently with Jack landing this 20 kg+ specimen. The crew also caught some nice Gummy Sharks, south of Lowarence Rocks. Amberjacks have been known to grow to 80 kg and pull harder than a freight train, and apparently the boys have been tangling with these brutes for a few years.

Port Fairy
Scott Gray ventured out over the weekend for a micro jigging session out wide. He reported that the conditions were a bit rough and sloppy, but found a great mixed bag including red snapper, swallowtail, mirror dory, cod, sea perch and a 7kg cuttlefish. 100g Storm koika jigs with twin assist hooks did the damage. They even had a school of tuna come and visit at the back of the boat!

The boys at Salty Dog Charters in Port Fairy have been having no trouble at all getting their customers onto a fish. Hows this for a mixed bag! Sharks, Tuna and a few tasty bottom fish.

Mallacoota
George Lirantzis has been having a dream run of form lately on the swords, here the crew is pictured with a recent 347kg Swordfish that crew member Max Elles, had a mammoth battle to land. George reports that it truly was a team effort to land this monster, with sharks and seals circling the boat in the final hour before dragging it aboard.

Eden
Scott, Jess and Jezza were out off Bunga Canyon earlier this week. Fishing deep during the day, the boys managed to bring up this awesome 'mini' sword, along with a great bag of Blueye.
