Plenty on offer in the Maroochy System!

For the fisherman who can’t get offshore the Maroochy River has started to fire up as we start moving into the warmer months. Anglers get very excited at this time of the year with the prospect of catching mangrove jack. Anglers are heading up river and fishing around the deeper holes upriver from Coolum Creek. Suspending lures are a favourite and the new coloured Daiwa Double Clutches are perfect for the job. Trevally are in good numbers in the river with quality golden and giant trevally taken from the river mouth up towards the traffic bridge. Fast moving slugs and soft plastics have been the go with the incoming tide the best bite. Good sized bream are still in good numbers with quality fish from Twin Waters, Nojoor Rd boat ramp and mouth of Petrie creek. Tailor are also in the mix coming in on the high tide around Pincushion Island and the Sand bags on the south side. Quality whiting have been taken around Black Banks and Chambers Island. A great way to fish for whiting is to use surface walkers and poppers while using an ultra-light finesse rod and reel. Give the new Bassday Sugapen colours a go they have been really coming up with the goods, a quick tip is to us a floating mono leader as fluorocarbon line sinks which can interrupt the action of the lure. Flathead numbers are great ant the moment with plenty of quality fish on offer, fishing the run out tide seems to be the most productive with plenty of good fish nesting up around the sand bars and mud banks.

For the angler that love the sand between their toes, the beach fishing has been a little tough with some pretty average conditions over the weekend. With the run off from all the rain I would be concentrating most of my efforts around the river mouths at the start of the run out tide, Tailor trevally and tarpon will be feeding on the small baitfish running to the more saline waters after the rain. Fast moving slugs and soft plastics cast to the edge of the dirty water line and retrieved at speed should see a result. For the bait anglers try quality pilchards, mullet fillet and bonito fillet. The closer gutters have also had plenty of action with flathead, bream, whiting and the ever-present dart feeding in close, best baits have ben worm, pippies, yabbies and prawns.

With the wind up for most of the last week, offshore report have been mostly from the larger vessels. Even with the sloppy conditions the angler that did get out managed to get some good results. The Gneerings is one of those great reefs that having a good burley trail going really pays off, fishing floater through that trail will get the fish coming up the trail to eventually find your bait! For the anglers in smaller craft that ventured out to hang on the closer reefs, old woman island was one of the main areas, squire, pearl perch, maori cod, mack tuna and the odd long tail tuna were all taken. Biger boats did the run to the Barwon Banks earlier in the week with plenty of quality snapper, pearl perch, jew, cod, parrot, and cobia all on the chew.
