Report 22/2/18

Post by subeditor » Thu Feb 22, 2018 11:36 am

The offshore fisherman were a little quieter than usual over the weekend due to large forecasted swell. With that in mind there were still a few fish caught to the lead up with some anglers reporting a good feed. Gneerings is where the spotties right thru to reef fish such as pearl perch, grass sweet lip, squire and Moses perch are on the chew. Using good baits like pillies, local squid and fresh mullet fillets on a two gang Tru Turn rig are securing the bigger fish. Out wide on the banks is where we are seeing pearl perch, big moses and snapper. Try using butterflied slimeys for the pearlies and floating big pillies for those bigger sized fish. Sunshine reef off Noosa has been popular for coral trout on yakka’s and spotty mackerel on floated pillies.

In the Maroochy River things are looking good for the weekend. Jack anglers have had good results at the Cod Hole a go with big baits of fresh mullet and bonito fillet being the popular baits. The jacks have also been taken on soft plastics late afternoon and early morning around the creek mouths. Plenty of flathead have been in the Maroochy River with the area around Goat Island and the mouth of Petrie Creek fishing well. Whitebait and baby blue pilchards on small ganged hook or two hook snooded rig on the outgoing tides has been the way to claim some good flatties. Plenty of whiting have been around Chambers Island, Picnic Point, and Black banks while using beach worms on a size four long shank hook. Trevally have also been in great numbers as the schools of bait increase in size. Good sized giant trevally and big eye trevally have been taken around Oyster Bank Road and the area just inside the mouth of the river on the run in tide. Surface lures like the Atomic K9 Bulldog and Bassday Sugapens will land you a nice fish.

On the beaches is where anglers have been catching some quality dart using small baitfish profile metal slugs. These fish are easily taken when retrieved at an average pace on the last half of the run in tide. Whiting are still in good numbers along the open beach with the stretch from Peregian to Marcoola Beach showing better numbers. Stick to the lower water gutters on the last half of the run in tide with worms and peeled prawns resulting in good catches. Flatties are the other species that is responding well to the lower water gutters. The key is to use baby blue pillies and mullet fillets on a two hook snooded rig.
