Flathead and bream on the bite in the Maroochy!

The Maroochy River has been a hive of activity over the past week with some great catches across the board. Good size bream, chopper tailor, and cracking flathead have come onto the bite with this cooler weather. Prawns, small pilchards and mullet strips have been working well for the bait anglers. For those that love to Fick plastics the Zman Slim SwimZ and Squdgies Bio Tough Range have all been working well with the River Mouth the spot to be, try and fish two hours either side of the high tide as this is when the majority of fish have been caught. The Twin Waters Weir has been fishing well for bream and trevally with some standout models being reported. The Jet Ski run has been the place to be if you want a bigger tailor, anglers have been trolling slugs and diving lures with some great success.

Land based anglers have claimed some nice fish from the wall at Oyster bank Rd and the Banks near the Bli-Bli Bridge with flathead, bream and the odd grunter all landed. Upriver around the Bli Bli Islands has been red hot for nice flathead with most fish holding in the shallower water on the run out tide. Further up river jew have been caught on big live baits out the front of Coolum Creek and further upriver towards Dunethin Rock.

On the beaches, we are mid moon phase at the moment and with some milder nights forecast this week we should expect to see some great catches of jew and tailor. When chasing jew and tailor concentrate your efforts around the top of the tide and use quality baits of pilchard, mullet or bonito. For those that fish when the sun is up there is plenty of quality whiting, dart and flathead coming from the closer gutters, prawns, worms and yabbies have been the prime baits. Winter bream are also along the beach front and are making short work of big strip baits.

Offshore; for those that made a trip out wide over the last week were well rewarded. The Barwon Banks was fishing well for snapper, pearlies, parrot, amberjack jew and Cobia. Micro Jigs have done the trick with many anglers having great success both in close and out wide, remember to vary your jigs weight depending on what depth and current that you’re fishing in. The Outer Gneerings has also been fishing well with good reports of sweetlip, tuskies, snapper and pearlies. A good burley trail is key, with live baits and whole pilchards the preferred baits. Old Woman Island has been popular with plenty of angler with a short time window picking up some quality sweetlip, snapper, and cod.
