Fishing hotting up with the warm weather!

It’s not just the weather that has been hot, the fishing has been really firing, heading offshore the pelagic’s are really starting to come on line and with plenty of bait around there is plenty for them to feed on. Most anglers have been looking for boil ups or bird activity and working small to medium sized slugs around the edges of the schools, the trick is to let those slugs sink a little before you start retrieving as the bigger mackerel seem to be holding a little lower. The River2sea Sea Rocks have been outstanding it is also worth changing the treble out to a Jigging single to get those solid hook ups. Plenty of reports have come from the reefs off Noosa but to the south Coolum Reef, Arkwright Sholes, Murphy’s and Caloundra 12 mile has been where most reports have come from. Spotted mackerel seem to be more plentiful with both spanish and wahoo also reported. Schools of tuna are also about with most being Mac but there is the odd long tail amongst them. Working the pressure edges of the reef with diving lures is also worthwhile, give the DTX minnows a go from Nomad, there are some great sizes, realistic colours and they can be towed up to 12 knots. Bait anglers have also do well with the good old pilchard floater also picking up some nice fish. From the bottom there are some quality snapper still around along with sweetlip, maori cod, parrot, cobia and pearl perch. Fishing hard to the bottom could also see you connect with a nice coral trout.

On the beach; the consistent offshore breezes have been keeping conditions fairly calm, most of the good fish have been taken very early morning or late evening and night. Tailor are still around with most fish coming on the evening tides, jew are also out there but are few in numbers. For families fishing during the day there are plenty of dart and whiting on offer with most fish taken in the close gutters, beach worms, pippies, yabbies and peeled prawns have are been great baits. Gutters can be a little hard to find but there is a couple of nice ones down towards Pincushion Island. Off the rocks at Yaroomba some nice bream and tailor have been taken along with the odd sweetlip and squire.

In the river, the hot weather has meant plenty of boat traffic on the water so to be successful you will need to get out there early, flathead numbers are still very good with plenty of angler reporting fish over the 60cm mark. Upriver has been where a lot of activity has come from so fishing areas like Bli Bli Islands on the run out tide has been worthwhile. Soft plastics have been dynamite with the Keitech Easy Shiners in the 3” and 4” very popular. Trevally numbers have also been good with some nice fish taken around the Oyster Bank Road area. Small soft plastics retrieved at speed or surface poppers have been the go at sunup. Twin Waters has also been firing with plenty of fish taken on live herring or poddy mullet. Down towards Black Banks and Chambers Island whiting have been in good numbers with the good old worm doing the trick. For those into a bit of finesse fishing popping for whiting is great fun, ideal conditions are a slight breeze at your back, light line, mono leader and a nice surface walker like the Bassday Sugapen. Walking the banks of Cotton Tree and Picnic Point is a great way to get some exercise along with having a fish. Don’t forget the polarised sunnies as well.
