Report 4/1/19

Post by subeditor » Fri Jan 04, 2019 3:34 pm

Offshore conditions still a little Tough!

With conditions not the greatest for offshore only the bigger vessels headed out last week, reports came mainly from the charter operators with most fish coming from the bottom. Snapper, sweetlip, moses perch, tusk fish and parrot were all landed fishing the Gneerings, Murphy’s reef and the Caloundra 12 mile, Murphy’s had plenty of reds but all were undersize. Pelagic seem to be a bit quiet at the moment with most fish reported off Noosa and Sunshine Reefs. There has been a far bit of run so big sinkers have been the go. Cobia and jew number have also dropped, this will be due to water clarity and is probable the same reason that the pelagic’s are sitting out wide. With lighter winds forecast for this week and the swell set to drop a little smaller craft should be able to hit the local reefs.

The river has been a hive of activity over the last week with plenty of boat traffic, the key to catching good fish has to be out there early or be prepared to do a late night. Good reports of Jew from the upper reaches have come in, most fish are that soapy size around 50cm but are great fun to catch. Plenty of smaller bull sharks have also been reported from the upper reaches and treated right the smaller one are good on the plate. There have also been some nice flathead taken in the river, fish over 65 cm have been in good numbers with plenty of good fish taken around Bli Bli Islands, and down towards Oyster bank rd. Whiting numbers have also been good with plenty of fish right the way up to Bli Bli bridge. Trevally numbers have been good with most fish being GT or big eye, fast moving slugs, and surface lures have claimed some good fish around the mouth.

On the beach the bigger swell stirred up the beach, this in turn exposes a far bit of bait and creates cover for the smaller fish like whiting and dart, there has been a far bit of sweep on the beach so bigger sinkers were necessary to hold ground, Whiting and dart have been in good numbers with plenty of fish holding in the closer gutters. Worms and pippies collected from the beach have been the perfect fresh baits. Some nice tailor came from around Pincushion Island on the run in tide, a couple of fish over the 60cm mark were taken along with some good choppers. Plenty of anglers have been putting in the hours at night in the hope for a jew, reports have been a little slow bit there have been plenty of shovel nosed sharks keeping anglers busy.
