One month gone in 2010 and its all come to a screaming halt on the fishing front thanks to the weather. In fact the week ahead is going to be less than ordinary with big seas, rain and high winds but this should settle towards the end of the week. Last week saw a big run of mackerel both spotties and spanish with boats everywhere chasing them. Saturday morning was good earlier on with birds working and plenty of activity on the sounder but then the rain came and conditions worsened as the day went on. The king tides have flushed out the estuary systems which is something that was badly needed and lets hope that it turns the fish in to action mode. The reefs still produced some squire, cod and pearl perch but the majority of the fish that were taken were pelagics.
Military Jetty is the spot for bream and trevally but they are few and far between and fishing into the evening has resulted in much better catches. Live bait such as herring or mullet have been the pick of the baits but prawns and pilchards will do the job. The moon and tides have bought on the squid and there has been some big ones taken around Old Woman's Island and with the estuary systems around Mooloolaba. Whiting and moses perch are amongst the catches within the canals and if last week was anything to go by the chances of you pulling up a sand crab are very good. The bridge around Pelican Waters also offers a chance to get out of the weather so get there early to have a crack. Chopper tailor are the culprits that are taking the bait off your hook quickly and to beat this try some mullet fillets or fresh squid and tie a couple of half hitches around the top of your bait.
This week it will have to be a day to day affair so check it out when you get up to see if it is worth heading out. Try the area around the Caloundra Boardwalk and bar for trevally, flathead and bream or move aroundto the protected area of the Blue Hole and try you luck. I look forward to seeing your pictures so don't forget if you catch a fish then send me a pic. bradmc@fishingmonthly.com.au Have Fun!
