Weekly Report 27 Mar 11

Post by Brad » Sun Mar 27, 2011 11:20 pm

The week ahead will give the fish some respite after anglers enjoyed four wonderful days in a row out wide with calm seas and next to know wind making conditions absolutely perfect. Sweetlip and red throat emperor were everwhere within the closer reefs along with plenty of cod and coral trount in particular within the limits of Sunshine Reef. The Gneerings held good numbers of sweetlip and iodine bream with a few hussar being placed in to the esky. The mackerel were being caught from Caloundra through to Noosa and a couple of real thumpers around the 25kg mark sure made some anglers happy. The cobia were around the deeper side of Murphy's and floating baits were the best way to nail them. There are some good bait schools around at the moment particularly yakkas but on a recent trip to the Barwon Banks we were struggling to reach the bait through the hundreds of tiny wrasse that were attacking anything and them following you to the boat as you wound in your line only to attack the minute the line hit the water again.

Some big fish that we nailed on the Banks were taken by sharks which is not all that common but they were everywhere on this day. Red emperor, hussar, gold spot wrasse and trevally, iodine bream by the bloody hundreds and tuskfish all picked at our baits and saw us use half of our daily rations within 20 minutes. That is the only way to describe the session that we had. We picked up a nice coronation trout before heading home where we began chasing the long tails tuna that were leaping from the water whilst they filled their mouths with froggies. So plenty of fish during the good weather break but the fish will get a rest this week as the weather returns to crap but will begin to ease towards the end of the week. There have been good catches of tailor at the mouth of the Pumistone Passage and the Maroochy River of late. I reckon that there are some good 2kg plus fish already zipping around the rocks of Shelly's and Kings beach. You will see me there in the afternoons tossing a slug until I get wacked.

Happy Valley is the spot to try for some flathead and trevally in the deeper holes. Tarwhine are still being caught around the lifesavers hut on the Bulcock beach and there are usually some nice 30cm bream in amongst them. Live prawns are dynamite and if you don't get your own prawns then try yabbies or mullet strips. The whiting are out there and it is just a matter of searching the areas for signs of them particularly around the snad flats opposite Gemini Towers. Well this week will be the time to get out the surface poppers and skippers or small soft plastics to entice some chopper tailor in the morning and diving hardbodied lures to nail some mulloway in the deeper channels. Have Fun!
