Weekly Report 21 Nov 11

Post by Brad » Mon Nov 21, 2011 7:53 am

November has lived up to its normally expectations of very little happening offshore. Hutchies Shoal, Caloundra Wide and the spoil grounds were like a desert over the weekend with very few pelagics being taken. Reports of one wahoo taken on a trolled skirt indicates that it is still very slow out on the water. The reefs seem to have been plagued by iodine bream which is what normally happens around the Barwon Banks at this time of year. On a good day where the northerlies don't blow you may be able to pick up parrot, cod, and sweetlip which is the case on the closer reef systems. Currimundi has plenty of bream and whiting are in abundance around the Pumicestone Passage. There are plenty of just legal flathead around sand flats near the Pelican Waters bridge. Yesterday afternoon I counted over 8 flathead lies during the last high tide. Soft plastics and small hard bodied lures like micro mullets would be perfect to target them. The bait fish (herring) are around in big numbers on the many pontoons and jetties around the traps so hook one of those on to entice a flathead or bigger bream.

This week there will be a couple of days that may prove worthly of a reef trip but don't hold your breath. The spotty mackerel will hopefully start to gather in numbers and the summer rush will soon be in full swing. In the meantime look for and work around good solid structure for best results. Try a trip to Old Womens Island or further north to Misery or Sunshine Reefs for the mackerel. Have Fun!
