Weekly Report 24 Mar 12

Post by Brad » Sat Mar 24, 2012 3:34 pm

A slight lull in the weather has allowed a couple of days fishing out wide with some interesting results. Spanish mackerel up to 14kg were taken around the Outer Gneerings through to the Mooloolaba blinker and plenty of smaller mack tuna schools were targeted when things got quiet. Trolling for spanish mackerel at the moment is so much better with small tuna or live baits in tow than with lures so get into the livies if possible. The dirty water line extends well out from the shoreline and is a great spot to try for some bigger predators, of course if you can get the dirty water line to meet around structure then your chances increase ten fold. The reefies turned it on around Friday afternoon with sweetlip, red throat emperor and moses perch making up some quality catches to anglers delight. Reefies this week should be targeted in the evenings or early parts of the morning and you will need to be sure you fish the tide changes for any chance at good numbers.

The estuaries will be full of big predators coming in under the cover of the dirty water so don't think for one second that you won't hook a monster over the next week or so. Try to get live bait like herring or mullet and slip one out on a paternoster rig and wait. There have been mackerel and big trevally cruising around so good luck. Crabs are plentiful but watch your pots from those that like to take what is not theirs. The jetties and pontoons will be the best places to target along with the deeper channel areas like the Blue Hole and the Boardwalk in Caloundra. Watch for tree branches and other rubbish in the water when boating. Have Fun and get yourself ready for a big Easter.
Troy caught this spaniard around the Outer Gneerings recently. Weighed in at 14kgs.
