Weekly Report 15 Apr 12

Post by Brad » Sun Apr 15, 2012 9:27 am

A fairly average week has just past but the week ahead looks like dynamite. Low winds and seas will make for plenty of opportunities to get out on the reefs and known mackerel spots to chase a few. The Caloundra 5 mile should have a few less boats on it than over the Easter break making it possible to maybe get a mackerel before they spook. This week work the close reefs on the tide change at dusk and dawn for the reef species and let me tell you there are plenty around. Moses perch, tuskfish and iodine bream have been around in big numbers along with the ever reliable hussar at this time of year. The Outer Gneerings will come into play this week for those of us that want to live bait or slow troll some big spaniards up. Look for any bouy, bit of timber or FAD to target mahi mahi because there are also a few of them around and although they are only small fish under 3kg they are well worth catching. Currimundi Reef and Bray's rock will also be worth a troll or cast this week for pelagics. Let's hope the rain does not stick around for long.

In the estuaries it is a matter of starting very early on the bream and flathead and work towards whiting as the day progressess. Yabbies, blood worms and soldier crabs are all good baits at the moment. There are a few trevally around the bridges and pontoons but you will work hard for them now. Look towards the mouth of the Pumistone Passage for bigger preditors this week. The settling conditions may see some big predators leaving the passage to whack the bait schools outside. The coffee rock along the northern tip of Bribie Island will be worth a look towards the middle of the week for all sorts of species. A great outlook ahead so get out there and catch some and remember to have fun!
