Weekly Report 13 May 12

The weather held off for a whole week on the Sunshine Coast and that made things on the fishing front very interesting. The reef species did not disappoint and for those that ventured out on to both the close and outer systems they were rewarded with some terrific fish. Tuskfish were around in good numbers on the Barwon Banks particularly within the 40m-50m marks and there were some prize snapper already hanging around the known haunts. We landed one good snapper around 5kg and it was loaded with tucker unfortunately though I dropped a season buster of what I believe was around the 8+kg the very next cast. Murphy's fired during the evening with moses perch, tuskfish, squire and other species. Wide Caloundra still has a number of trag jew hanging around deep water marks along with cobia and amberjack. The later part of the coming week will be the best time to get offshore with high winds early ensuring no chance at all. The Gneerings is also now worth a shot for snapper and pearl perch as the water temperature drops.

The estuaries have been giving up some quality flathead and bream. The Boardwalk and Happy Valley have again features but don't discount Military Jetty and the Pelican Waters Bridge area during the ebb tidal flow. Whiting are about the weed beds past Bell's Creek and a few nice bream to 850 grams have been taken on fresh mullet around the Blue Hole in the evenings. Still no mulloway in any numbers to report but that will change in the coming months. The beaches will be worth looking at in around 6-8weeks for tailor and mulloway so get your gear ready to rock. Mooloolaba within the harbour has some good bream and smaller chopper tailor to target on small chrome slugs or plastics. They are schooling up hardiheads and whitebait around the pylons and jetties. A good week ahead provided it doesn't turn northerly with the wind so keep your fingers crossed. Have fun!
