Weekly Report 10 Sep 12

Post by Brad » Mon Sep 10, 2012 7:05 pm

A top weekend for fishing except after lunch on Sunday. After the winds got up the fish disappeared unless you were happy to venture out to the deeper waters of the Banks. There are some great sportfish around at the moment and the common wrecks and channel markers are the place to target the big cobia. Live yakkas are the only way to go when you are targeting them and either a floating bait or snell rig will get you the rewards. Some cobia can take a well presented paternosta rig but for the majority the bigger boys follow the previous advise. Coronation trout are around the bait schools and make a top meal when everything else is hard to catch. There were isolated reports of wahoo being caught around Hutchinson Shoal and in the deep waters around Tempest some quality snapper and parrot. Overall tuskfish are scattered across the reefs and there are plenty of pearl perch. Big kingfish are lurking in the deeper areas particularly Caloundra Wide and either livies or jigs are the go.

The estuaries are still producing some good flathead and quality mulloway. Try around the bridge at Pelican Waters, Military Jetty in the evenings and the Cod Hole around Maroochydore later at night. Worms, livebait such as herring or poddy mullet are classics to lure the mulloway or a filthy big flathead. Trevally are nailing soft plastics and hard bodied lures at the moment throughout the passage. Work the shallows early in the mornings with poppers for whiting and flathead. Wading out in the knee deep water and covering plenty of ground is the best way to approach this. All in all a great time to be fishing so try the estuaries and the reefs this week. Have Fun!
Quality fish are around and closer than you think.
